Fanzines: DIY, small, self-published, non-commercial booklets or magazines.
This school holiday, I tried my hand at zine making at City if Perth Library. I joined art therapist Cheryl Millard from the Social Hermit for an Young Adult art therapy workshop.
The goal of this event was to create a safe space for people to connect with others, make art and express themselves freely.

For a whole hour we got carried away crafting two pages of our very own zine. We got to use lots of stationery and even magazines for scrap booking.
I wish we had more than an hour, as I would have really loved to finish my zine. But I still managed to finish two pages. I cut pages, illustrations and text from the Teen Breathe magazines.

The first page uses soft pastel colours, hot-air balloons, and small illustrated houses to create a comforting setting. I loved the shapes of the houses I included, along with the cute hot air balloons.
The second page has a sunset toned, flowery, and cloudy theme, incorporating clouds and flowers I found from a few different pages. I chose the text “welcome” because the shadow effect was a similar colour to the center of the flowers. Now that I think about it, I probably should have made this page my cover. 😅
Learnings
Overall, creating these zine pages was a calming and enjoyable process for me. It was exciting trying to find things to add to my zine, sorting through newspapers, magazines and craft supplies. I had so much fun today at the event.
